New GM Pickup Trucks to Have Diesel Power

Looking for better fuel economy? It appears GM will offer diesel options for its upcoming mid-size trucks.
As diesel engines finally start to make some headway in the US market, two upcoming new mid-size pickup trucks will also be joining the oil burning club. A report is claiming the newChevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon are slated to be offered with either the 2.5- or 2.8-liter four-cylinder turbodiesel engines that power the Colorado in overseas markets. That 2.5-liter unit produces 150 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque while the larger unit has 179 hp and 347 lb-ft.

Those specs may change somewhat for the US market, but nothing too significant. GM is still working on making a final diesel engine decision, but don’t expect for it to be offered when the trucks initially go on sale. Sources are claiming the oil burner option won’t become available until about a year after the gasoline-engined trucks go on sale. Looking on a calendar, that means the Canyon/Colorado diesels won’t happen until fall 2015. We say: better late than never.
