Next-Gen BMW X1 is Going FWD

BMW's upcoming lineup of smaller models will soon ditch rear-wheel-drive.
BMW is known for being "The Ultimate Driving Machine" brand, but as global emissions regulations continue to play an even larger role, even this German automaker has to make some compromises. One example is the next-generation X1 crossover, which will be making the switch from rear-wheel to front-wheel-drive. Our spy photographers managed to snap some images of a prototype being transported between two different testing facilities in Germany.

From what we can tell, the new model won’t look dramatically different than the current one, but it will ride on the same platform as the upcoming BMW 1 Series GT and the next-gen Mini Cooper. Compared to the current car, the next X1 will actually offer more interior space despite sharing its underpinnings with the new Mini. Specific power plants are still unknown, but expect to see a lineup of four-cylinder gasoline and diesel engines along with an entry-level turbocharged 1.5-liter three pot. A hybrid is also possible an an All-wheel drive will be optional. Expect to see the new X1 debut sometime in 2015.
